Worcester Art Museum Names Claire Chandler Whitner Director of Curatorial Affairs

The Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts named Claire Chandler Whitner its new director of curatorial affairs and curator of European art. Previously, she has worked at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College, most recently as assistant director of curatorial affairs and senior curator. In her new role, starting August 20, Whitner will oversee the Worcester Art Museum’s curatorial direction across different departments, including current work on reexamining installations of American and European art in its collection.

Prior to her work at the Davis, Whitner served as a curatorial research fellow at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and, in Los Angeles, a curatorial/exhibition assistant at the Skirball Cultural Center and a research assistant at the Getty Research Institute.

In a statement, Matthias Waschek, the Worcester Art Museum’s director, said, “Claire has demonstrated a dynamic approach to rethinking a museum’s exhibitions and how an institution can use this process to improve audience engagement.”

Whitner said she will work in line with the museum’s mission to “demonstrate the relevance of art to the lives of all its visitors.” Of her new position, she said, “WAM has been on the forefront of rethinking how to present works of art. I am excited about the opportunities ahead of us in Worcester.”
